Geocache Description:

There is one other cache located in West Bamfield. It is : GC29PZ4.

The feral cat community was located at the posted coordinates and had quite a history.  It started when the former post mistress, Mary Scholey started feeding stray cats.  It wasn't long before there were over 100 cats and it was out of control.  A local group of volunteers got together and started trapping the cats and sending them to Port Alberni to a veterinarian for a health check and either spaying or neutering.  Some of the cats were then placed in a couple of pet stores who saw that they went to good homes.  The remaining cats were returned to Bamfield to live out the rest of their lives.

The cat houses are no longer there as the cats have all passed on.

We have left the information and the photos on this page so people can see the history of the feral cat program.

The coordinates for the second stage of this cache is found at the posted coordinates.  The final is in a local business so normal business hours apply.  Please respect the business customers when asking for the cache.  The cache is big enough to hold TB's and Coins but it is not recommended to leave any trackables towards the end of the summer as there will not be many visitors in the winter months.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Drive from Port Alberni on a multi use industrial gravel road (approximately 82 kilometers).  On arrival in Bamfield it is necessary to take a water taxi across to the West side of the harbour.  The number for the water taxi is posted at the East side Government Dock.  If you have a canoe or a kayak, it is possible to paddle across the harbour.  It is about a 5 minute ride.

Travel down the Alberni Canal from Port Alberni on the MV Francis Barkley.  A lovely trip that takes approximately four hours  one way and makes many stops along the way to drop off and pick up freight etc.  The Barkley's first stop in Bamfield is on the West side where you would need to disembark.  It depends on the amount of freight they have how long the stop is but the Captain will advise you of that before disembarking.

Travel down the Alberni Canal by a private boat.  There is a dock for parking at the General Store.
