We have changed the container and moved this one. It is still a fairly small container, but can hold small swag. The cache name and hint are still relevant.
One of our “Memories” series. This was the nearest branch to our home when we were growing up. We were lucky enough to have a bookmobile come and park within walking distance during the summer. When elder sister’s kids were young, we would come here for summer activities. We miss that slope-roofed building. Wish we could find a picture!
Here’s a little history for you: The first Rock Road Branch opened for public use on December 7, 1957 in a building that had been constructed as a neighborhood movie house. It had an unusual design with a high peaked roof that sloped at different angles to frame a facade of brick and glass. Its life as the La Cosa Theater was a short one, and it was a dark, vacant building when St. Louis County Library was searching for a site for its first regional branch.
Library officials were especially attracted to its accessible location. The property was purchased in 1956 for $304,000 and the building completely renovated before opening as a library.
