The heart of downtown Charlotte - The Square - where Trade and Tryon intersect. The most likely place for the Grande Disco - really, Charlotte, NC - NOT!!! THIS IS THE HIGHEST MUGGLE AREA IN CHARLOTTE - YOUR VERY BEST STEALTH SKILLS ARE REQUIRED! Please place the cache back in the original location to help your fellow cachers who may be using the hint. Bring a pen. Happy searching!
The sculpture was commissioned in 1973 by North Carolina National Bank and Carter and Associates, developers of Independence Square Plaza. The two companies donated the sculpture to the people of Charlotte and the Mint Museum in July 1978. The sculpture had been exhibited at an exhibition of the artist's work in 1974 at the Rotonda della Besana, Milan (Italy). In November 1980, the sculpture, marred by magic markers, paint, and deep surface scratches, underwent restoration by SignArt Inc. It was sandblasted and coated with a clear urethane, and a new bearing added in its base to enable the sculpture to turn.
The plaque on the ground in front of sculpture reads "Grande Disco - Our life today is one of crisis...of movement...of tension. We do not know what our world/will become. I try to say something about this uncertainty in my work. I try to communicate a sense of vitality and connection with the movement of life today...and to be a part of its movement. The social challenge of art today, in my opinion, is to start a dialogue with the people. I hope that is what happens here with The Grande/Disco. Arnaldo Pomodoro Oct. 2, 1974 A gift to the people of Charlotte by NCNB and Carter & Associates."
NOTE: This is a high visit cache and the log can become filled rather quickly. If you see the log running out of room please note that fact in your log.
P L E A S E: Log a DNF if you cannot find the cache container. It is only with such notice that I know that the container might be missing. It is also a comfort to those who may wish to attempt the cache before it is replaced.
