Geocache Description:

This is a short multi to highlight a pair of large Indian trail trees on this island. Having a compass may help but isn't necessary. There is a short uphill bushwhacking section involved. Paddlers can launch for free from Duckett Mill Park. From the ramp it's a half mile to the nearest point on the island and another quarter mile to this cache.

Trail trees are also known as “signal trees” or “thong trees”. They would be carefully bent over and held down with sinew to point to something of interest like a meeting place or sacred burial ground. Using the following instructions, these trees will guide you to the .30 cal ammo can.

The posted coordinates bring you to the first trail tree. It’s close to the water’s edge and you may be able to park your boat right there (I did). If you were to sit on the horizontal section with your back to the water you’d be very nearly facing the second tree. Just aim yourself a few degrees to the right from that position and head up the hill. If you brought your compass, determine the bearing that the first tree is pointing (ex: 120 degrees). Subtract 70 from that value to get the bearing to the second tree. Walk 195 feet up the hill in that direction and you should see the other tree which is shown in the picture below. It's pretty big and should be hard to miss.

 Second Trail Tree

The second trail tree is really quite impressive! To locate the cache, use your compass to determine which way the tree is pointing and add 20 degrees to that. If you don't have a compass, just aim yourself slightly to the right of where the tree's pointing. Walk 45 feet or so to the cache.

Please leave no trace of your visit to this island.

Hope you enjoy this cache!

I've included a prize for the FTF. There's another .30 cal ammo can hidden nearby for the first finder to keep and do with as they please. Instructions for finding it are in an envelope inside the cache. With any luck I'll see it again someday...and get a smiley for it!!
Congrats to boca bob for FTF!! And thanks for turning that ammo can into Robinson Park.

Thanks TheMoiety for picking this to be your 500th cache.
Congrats!!
