Geocache Description:

Rt. 66 Traveler (Relocated)

The original Rt. 66 Traveller and TB Motel had to be archived due to continued muggle problems.

This new location is still accessible for cross country travelers on Old US Rt. 66 (now I-40, I-44 and I-55). The goal is still the same: try to get some TBs to make it from Santa Monica, CA to Chicago, IL, and vice versa.

There is of room in this cache for TBs. See the Route 66 New Mexico Bookmark List for other caches along Old Rt. 66.

Known as the Mother Road from the 1930’s through the 1990’s, US Highway Route 66 has become an American icon of the country’s westward growth. The advent of the automobile that could reliably facilitate the transport of people and possessions played a major role in the development and steady improvement of the highway. I-40. I-44, and I-55 generally follow old Rt. 66.

Its birth in 1926 was followed by constant improvements to handle the increasing traffic that was lured across America’s heartland. From the shore of Lake Michigan at Chicago, Illinois, to the Pacific Ocean at Santa Monica, California, it formed a major part of the culture and history of the American west that continues to this day.

Little remains of the original road and alignment today as the interstate system sought to make traveling faster and easier. For instance, Route 66 originally went through Santa Fe, New Mexico, then looped back south through Indian reservations to Albuquerque. In 1937, a new section was opened from Santa Rosa, New Mexico, directly to Albuquerque through Tijeras Canyon, and is now a part of Interstate 40.

Old timers will always remember the open vistas, multiple road signs, curio shops and “tourist courts” that inspired writers, artists and photographers for decades through the midwest and southwest. With the advent of television, the Mother Road and its people became known to all the world by the series “Route 66.”

It is hoped the cache will provide interstate travelers an opportunity to easily move TBs and goodies from one end of Rt. 66 to the other. The cache is near the east end and a few blocks north of Albuquerque’s Central Avenue and easy off/on I-40.

Any old timers remember seeing the many garish roadside signs as shown in the gallery?

Initial contents of the cache are Logbook, Rt. 66 refrigerator magnet, Woodsy Owl, green hot wheels, and token from the Big Texan Steakhouse at Amarillo.
