This cache is placed along the mountain bike section of Monty's Revenge Multisport Race course.
The 23km Mt bike section starts at Maraetotara Reserve where the 12km run finishes. Bikers ride up a gravel road over some farm tracks to the start of the Rawhiti Mt bike Park home of the Whakatane Mt bike Club. From here they climb over a hill and down to the Pekatahi road rail bridge and the start of the 20km kayak.
Three local geocaches - Geckoh, Ymana and Ruruwha, have entered the race this year as "Team Geocaching" to promote the sport. See caches GC29DB4 'The Start of Monty's Revenge' and GC29Y51 'Monty's Revenge Last Leg(s)' for more info about this local race.
Unfortunetly the access rights into the forestry only allows for club members and race day participants, so if you wish to ride these trails you can get a short term permit and trail map for $5 from the Whakatane Information Centre.
The cache is just through the white pipe gate via the bike access, where the single track heads off through some kawakawa (NZ pepper tree) and young redwoods.
Small cache so only contains log, pencil and a small geo coin for removal.
