Geocache Description:

I found this area with my geocaching partner Ligia. We were out and about breaking in her new geo-mobile, a Polaris Ranger. We were driving along this trail when out of no where this “orchard” of ocotillos framed the trail. Some of them were starting to bloom and I imagine it will be quite beautiful when our monsoon rains start. The ocotillos go on for a quarter mile or so and it is a nice feature along the trail as it climbs towards the Organ Mountains. I couldn’t resist putting a cache. I wanted to make it easily accessible so everyone could enjoy the unique area. A 4x4 is not needed but I would suggest a vehicle with good clearance.
Here is a little info about the ocotillo. Luckily, it is not an endangered plant and is grown easily. Its habitat is the deserts of southern California, New Mexico, and extends as far as Texas. Ocotillo prefers an elevation of 5000 ft. above sea level. It grows best in areas where there is limestone, rocky hillsides, and sandy plains. The estimated life span of an ocotillo is 60 years, and a few plants have lived past 72 years- Not bad for a plant that doesn’t get a lot of water! Ocotillos are pollinated by hummingbirds so keep an eye out for the birds during migration season and you might get some great pictures!
Please take your time and enjoy the area. No FTF prize but some goodies to choose from. The best way to access the cache is to start on Dripping Springs Road towards Ligia’s cache “There may be many Ammo Cans but this one is mine” and make a right onto the jeep trail that goes towards the back of the ridge. This trail crosses an arroyo and continues all the way to another cache, Mimi’s Mob cache “Not Off Limits,” if you decide to go that far. Ocotillo Ambush is a nice stop in between.

Congratulations to Mr. Waldo for the FTF!
