Located 7 miles south of Hill City on Hwy 385 Oreville is better known today as a National Forest Service campground.
A faint recollection of a railroad stop along the Burlington Northern Railroad, today it is also a rest stop along the 109 mile Mickelson Trail. There are 15 trailheads where you may purchase a day pass for $5 or a year pass for $20. It seems that mainly tin was mined in this area and beryllium was refined at the old mill building.
The former Burlington Northern Railroad line from Deadwood to Edgemont was abandoned in 1983. Former governor George Mickelson (January 31, 1941 – April 19, 1993) was instrumental in establishing the trail for recreational use. The first six miles stretch was opened in 1991 and the trail was completed in 1998. Today it is open for hiking, biking and horseback riding.
