This cache was placed in Caledonia State Park by the Environmental
Interpretive Technician. Through forest succession, the Chestnut
Oak (also known as ‘Rock Oak’) has become the dominant
tree species on the dry and rocky ridge top of Chinquapin Hill.
The Rock Oak is native, and can live up to 500 years. The acorn
mast of oaks provides an important food source for squirrels,
turkey and white-tailed deer.
