Geocache Description:

Encompassing the southern quarter of the everglades marshland in Florida, the park is touted as the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. The park is also the third largest in the continental United States at 1.5 million acres. Different from most national parks, Everglades was created to protect a fragile ecosystem rather than a geological feature.

Unknown to most, the everglades is actually a slow-moving system of rivers traveling at speeds well under 1 mile per day. As such, it makes an ideal habitat for hundreds of species of birds, fishes, mammals and over 50 species of reptiles including alligators and American crocodiles.

Four species of venomous snakes can be found in the waters of the Everglades including the eastern diamondback rattlesnake, the dusky pigmy rattlesnake, the cottonmouth snake and the coral snake. However, along with the other dangerous creatures of the region like the alligators, most tend to shy away from people and very few attacks are ever recorded.

The most pleasant time of year to visit the Everglades is from December through April when the average highs reach in the70's and lows in the 50's. Summertime is hot and humid and the rainy season runs from June through October.
