After 15 years, the transformation of Coal Creek Parkway is complete. Newcastle’s main drag, which also connects Bellevue with Renton, has evolved from a two-lane rural road to a modern four-lane thoroughfare, topped off by the architectural splendor of the new May Creek Bridge, dedicated July 16, 2009.
The City of Newcastle began planning the modernization of this roadway in 1994, the year it incorporated. The project required several years, funding partners, and infinite patience from local residents and businesses, who suffered through traffic-clogging construction and a year-long closure of the south end of Coal Creek Pkwy (aka Duvall Ave) at this very intersection. But the result is worth it - at least, we think so.
If you have time, walk down to May Creek Bridge - it looks even better up close, and you can inspect the fine ironwork and dedication plaque.
