How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

When you reach the cache location coordinates, turn to face the Kennecot Open-Pit Mine, and the cache will be about 30 feet directly behind you in the oak brush covered by some flat rocks. Facing the mine, your right hand pointed straight to the side will point to downtown Salt Lake City.

In order to reach the cache you need to use these intermediate waypoints:

40 36.147N Elev: 5190 ---park here.
111 47.489W

40 36.096N Elev: 5238
111 47.452W

40 36.102N Elev: 5548
111 47.150W

40 36.146N Elev: 5555
111 47.300W

You will want hiking boots to reach the cache. There is almost a 400 foot elevation gain.

You'll be crossing some private ground so stay on the trails and don't go near either the old mine tailings, scree, or the mines themselves. The ground can be unstable in those areas but they're not difficult to aviod. Again, stay on the trails. There is partial snow-cover at this time but it's not a problem.

When you reach the cache coordinates you'll find a mini-mountain peak shaped rock about 30-36" tall. It is not near other similar rocks and is partially hidden by oak-brush. It is not difficult to find, however.

The cache is an ammo box. Inside you'll find a log, some information on the general area, a few pieces of candy in case you have children with you, and a gift certificate to Guru's, a nearby restaurant. They've been very generous and may just become our un-official Utah Geocacher's restaurant! Don't forget to thank them.
