The Sluice and Hall Spillway Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Inkwell: This one had indeed gone missing yet again. Amazing spot for a cache, but it's time to let this one go. The area has turned into a hobo shanty town during the warmer months and I am sure that's why the cache has gone missing so much. I hope those bums were able to trade our cache for a can of beans or a bag of crack or something. Thanks to all who took the time to go after this one and apologies to the folks who couldn't find it.

Geocache Description:

We've been wanting to hide a cache in this area for a very long time now and finally got around to doing it today. Lockport is filled with amazing history and many engineering marvels. This cache will show you a bit of both.

The listed coords will bring you to an informational plaque that will help you solve the puzzle below. Please use the parking coords that are listed and walk to the final cache once you've solved the puzzle. You can't park legally in the lot nearest to the actual cache.

The puzzle is in format:

N 43. 10 . ABC
W 078 . 41. DEF

A = The 3rd digit in the culvert number that meets at the Spillway.

B = The sum of the 3 digits in the culvert number.

C = The last digit in the year that there were 50 industries using water from the canal.

D = The 2nd digit in the distance in feet that the old raceway entered the canal from this point.

E = Convert the name of the creek that meets here to a digit. Divide this digit by 9 to get the solution to E.

F = There is an emblem visible at the top of this sign. Add the four digits on this emblem together and subtract 20 to get F.

So once you've solved this easy little ditty, you'll take a short walk to the final cache location. If you're lucky, you'll get to see one of these hydraulic bridges in action! It's pretty cool to see boats pass under them as they head up the canal toward the locks!

When you get to ground zero, you'll be looking for a small lock n' lock container that contains a log book only; you'll have to BYOP.

Please note that you'll probably want to leave the kids at home for this one. If you choose to explore the area near the final cache location, the footing could be a bit unstable and we also spotted graffiti nearby that could be considered offensive to some. However, the final cache won't force you to explore this area; it's hidden far enough away to make exploration optional. You'll understand what we mean when you get to GZ. There is absolutely no night caching allowed here...don't be an idiot. Also, we CITO'd some trash out of the area. If you've got the time and an extra bag, feel free to pick some stuff up.

Good Luck and Happy Caching!
