The Winter Lodge. For those of you unaware, the Winter Lodge is an outdoor ice skating rink on Middlefield, and also so much more than that. The Winter Club opened in 1956, when Duncan Williams invented a new way to keep ice outside using a system of brine (salt water) through pipes. It could get colder than ice, so the pipes wouldn't freeze.
Soon after, the Winter Club was a huge hit, until the 1980's, when Williams wanted to sell his rink, which was to be made into condos. Through some tenacious ice skating aficionados, a fight with city hall, and countless parades, protests, and resisting, the public rink was kept open, and to this day, maintains itself as the largest ISI skating school in the entire USA.
I myself (when it's not summer) come here twice every week to skate 'till my heart's content.
This cache is a somewhat easy find, and it's very large. A fine place to drop off those Travel Bugs you've been keeping so long, with no place to put them in this urban sea of micros.
Happy caching! The cache will await your numerous travel bugs and finders. This is the second of the two "Equilateral" caches.
