Geocache Description:

Vyfhoek-Gedenktuin

Next to the Potchefstroom East Dutch Reformed Curch a memorial garden was erected to honour the 1441 deceased from the Potchefstroom Concentration camps.

Volgens gegewens
sterfgevalle voorgekom. Hier was vroeër 'n groot
twee graniettablette as gedenkstene aangebring,

According to history, approximately 300 women and children from the first camp (situated between Wasgoedspruit and Spoorweg station), were buried.   Previously there was a larger memorial next to the camp, but now the two monuments, a memorial needle and cenotaph tell the whole compelling story.  Two granite tablets are attached to the memorial needle as memorialstones – one on 16 December 1918.  It was inaugurated by te widow of Genl. J.H. de la Rey: From the second camp, where the Vyfhoek memorial garden is situated at present (at the top of Burger street) 1141 people died.

 SENOTAAF

Die ander monument, 'n senotaaf, is ongeveer
100 m van die gedenknaald opgerig. Dit
verteenwoordig die honderde stukkende grafstene
wat daar vroeër was, as 'n simboliese graf.
Sentrale Burgergrafkomitee, is 'n groot verbetering

The other monument, a cenotaph, is erected approximately 100m from the memorial needle. It represents the hundreds of vandalised gravestones that were previously there, as a simbolic grave. It is an eightsided structure made out of granite that displays the names of those deceased in the camp.  The names are split in two parts and are listed alphabetically: those of the children aged 15 years and younger, and those of the people older than 15 years.  From details on the cenotaph it seems that 967 children, 117 women and 57 men died in this second Potchefstroom camp.  At first the terrain was randomly cleaned by students, but after it was neglected it was officially handed over to the Afrikaans Culture Council in 1963 by the Vyfhoek North Management Council.  However they still lacked the funds to erect a monument.  With the help of the Central Burger Burial Committee improvements were done in the form of walls, a garden and the erection of the cenotaph.  Since 1963 thePotchefstroom Municipality is responsible for the maintenance of the grounds.
