“The Interurban” was a light-rail form of transportation, common in the early 20th Century, before automobiles became dominant. Rural roads were often muddy two-tracks, and rail lines were often the best way to get from one town to the next. This cache series is an historical “Cache-umentary”, documenting some of the remaining traces of the Interurban line that operated between Lansing and Jackson Michigan.
“Hello Down There”- Like Cache #2, this location demonstrates the length to which track designers had to go to make sure that the rail bed did not have sections that were too steep for rail traffic. In this area, the rail bed goes from a high elevation to the south to a lower elevation to the north. To manage this, a deep ravine was cut through the hill. This also made things difficult for car and horse traffic, as the roadway also had to drop down into this ravine. Of course the road commission has fixed that problem since the line was abandoned.

Note: The house on the other side of the road has dogs, which come out near the road, but have always stayed in their yard when I was there.
CACHE DESCRIPTION: Cache is located on the side of a rural road. Parking is limited to nearby farm/field access. Please don’t park in yards or driveways. Don’t forget your hazard lights.
