Sinds 2009 is het wandelpad over de zeereep van de Koog weer in ere hersteld. Dit historische duinpad was in de loop der jaren verdwenen onder het zand. Het 250 meter lange pad gaat van de Badweg naar Slag Opduin. Neem de tijd voor deze cache, ga er even bij zitten en laat u verrassen door het uitzicht. Vanaf hier hebt u ook een beeld van de strijd tegen de kustafname.

Langs de hele Texelse westkust vinden we strand. Op de Hors komt duinvorming voor. De kustlijn wordt beschermd door de natuurlijke duinenrij, door strekdammen in het zuidelijk deel, zandsuppleties en een lange strekdam bij de vuurtoren. Een wandeling van zuid naar noord wordt bemoeilijkt door het geultje waarmee de Slufter in verbinding staat met de zee. Mede als gevolg van de zandsuppleties zijn op het strand van Texel veel schelpen, zwerfkeien en vuurstenen te vinden.

De strijd tegen het water
De Hors, de stranden, de zeereep en een deel van de achter de zeereep liggende duinen worden door Rijkswaterstaat beheerd en vallen onder het Rijkszeeweringsreglement. Het natuurbeheer van de Slufter is in handen gegeven van Staatsbosbeheer. Het kustbeheer is in de loop van de tijd veranderd. In het beheer is ruimte gekomen om natuurlijke processen hun gang te laten gaan, om zo de variatie in biotopen te kunnen behouden. Rijkswaterstaat wil af van het totaal vastleggen van de duinen en de daarmee samenhangende versnelde veroudering van de vegetatie. In het verleden is een deel van de Texelse kust versterkt door het maken van 24 strandhoofden. Deze strandhoofden zijn te vinden tussen Hoornderslag (paal 9) en Ecomare (paal 17). Rond de vuurtoren zijn de duinen verstevigd met een bolwerk: beton, asfalt en klinkers vormen de verdediging. In zee zijn hier zinkstukken aangelegd tot zo'n 12 meter diepte om te voorkomen dat de duinen verder worden aangetast.
Om verdere achteruitgang van de kust te vertragen worden zandsuppleties uitgevoerd. De eerste drie suppleties werden uitgevoerd met zand afkomstig van platen uit de Waddenzee. Vanaf 1990 werd het zand op 14 kilometer uit de kust in de Noordzee, bij de 'Texelse Stenen', gewonnen.

De kustafslag
De kustafslag is een blijvend probleem. Zandsuppleties zullen bij ongewijzigd beheer steeds nodig zijn. Rijkswaterstaat zoekt naar alternatieven. Zo zou de aanleg van een 500 meter lange dam een oplossing zijn om de kustafslag te verminderen. In 1995 werd deze dam loodrecht op de kust, iets zuidelijk van de Eierlandse vuurtoren aangelegd.

Walkway over the beach ridge

Since 2009, the trail on the beach ridge of the Koog has been restored. This historic dune path over the years disappeared under the sand. The 250 meters long path leads from the Badweg to Opslag Opduin. Take some time for the cache, just sit and be surprised by the view. From here you have a picture of the struggle against the shore decline.

All along the coast we find Texel beach. Hors comes on for dune formation. The coastline is protected by natural dunes, breakwaters from the south, beach nourishment and a long breakwater to the lighthouse. A walk from south to north is hampered by the gully Slufter which is connected to the sea. Partly as a result of beach nourishment on the beach of Texel many shells, flints and boulders found.

The fight against water
The Hors, the beaches, the coastal strip and part of the dunes behind the beach ridges are the local councils managed and are subject to government regulation Seawall. The nature of the Slufter is in the hands of Forestry. The coastal management in the course of time changed. In the control room has come to their natural processes going to let go, so the variation in communities to maintain. RWS will depend on the total capture of the dunes and the related accelerated deterioration of vegetation. In the past, part of the Texel coast strengthened by making 24 breakwaters. These breakwaters are located between Hoornder Battle (post 9) and Ecomare (post 17). Around the lighthouse are the dunes, reinforced with a stronghold: concrete, asphalt and bricks are the defense. Coastal erosion
Coastal erosion is a continuing problem. Sand nourishment will always be necessary to change management. Department of Public Works is looking for alternatives. Thus the construction of a dam 500 meters long for a solution to reduce coastal erosion. In 1995 the dam perpendicular to the coast, just south of the lighthouse.
