Geocache Description:

Old Park Headquarters - 1923

The cache is located near the old park headquarters for Lake Itasca State Park. Difficulty is due to muggles nearby. Stealth is needed.

The old park headquarters was built in the early 1920's, the cornerstone in the foundation is inscribed "1923". The building housed the park office, switchboard, kitchen and dining room for the park crew and the park superintendent, along with his family.

The 128x45 foot building was used as the park headquarters until 1940-41 when the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) completed the headquarters building and superintendent's house across the road to the north.

The old park headquarters has been used for storage and to house the park's seasonal employees. Today, the old park headquarters is a hostel operated by the non-profit Hostelling International - Minnesota and sponsor of Tour de Pines, a local bike riding event.
