Geocache Description:

Party at the Moon Tower #5
South 1st Street and Monroe Street

Once a popular form of lighting in the US and Europe, Austin is now home to the only remaining moonlight towers in the world. Between 1894 and 1895 there were 31 moon towers erected in Austin. The original carbon arc lamps used illuminated a circle approximately 3,000 feet in diameter with a blue-white light (The towers now use 6,400-watt mercury vapor bulbs). Sadly, just 15 moon towers remain today. They are now designated as official state archeological landmarks and are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

This moon tower is in an old Austin neighborhood called Bouldin Creek. Bouldin Creek is peppered with Mexican bakeries, tattoo shops and art galleries. The Texas School for the Deaf is also nearby. The actual creek runs through the neighborhood and has a greenbelt (East Bouldin Creek Greenbelt) tucked away between Bouldin Ave and South 1st Street.
