Die Mineralquellen sind nicht das einzige Zeugnis der vulkanischen Aktivität in der Gegend.Der Vulkanismus hat auch die Landschaft um Birresborn geprägt.
Vor etwa 1 Million Jahren tat sich hier die Erde auf.Ihr entquellen die gewaltigsten Basaltlavaströme,die wahrscheinlich jemals in der Eifel ausgeflossen sind.Allein der Vulkan Kalem nördlich von Birresborn hinterließ großflächig bis zu 40 m mächtige Basaltablagerungen.
Zu dieser Birresborner Vulkangruppe gehört auch der Fischbachvulkan.Von ihm ergossen sich nicht nur Lavaströme,sondern es wurden neben der Basaltlava und vulkanischen Aschen auch Schweißschlacken gefördert,die heute noch die markanten Felsformationen bilden in denen die Eishöhlen zu finden sind.
Zwischen den Felsen liegen die fünf Eingänge zu den Eishöhlen.
Es wird längst nicht jeder Stollen zu eine Eishöhle.Aber die Höhlen über dem Fischbachtal erfüllen alle Voraussetzungen.
Das poröse vulkanische Gestein ist von hoher Feuchtigkeit,so wird die Entstehung des Eises durch Verdunstungskälte begünstigt.
Die Eingänge zu den Höhlen liegen relativ hoch,während die Gänge abwärts führen.So kann hier unten die Kaltluft nicht abziehen.Früher kam es daher auch im Hochsommer zu Eisbildung,was aber in den letzten Jahren nicht mehr der Fall gewesen ist.
Um den Cache zu loggen beantworte folgende Fragen und erfülle folgende Bedingungen.
Gehe zur Infotafel und studiere die Tafel.
1. Wodurch sind die Höhlen entstanden?
2. Welche Gesteinsart ist mit dem Dachsberg assoziiert?
3. Was Zeigt Abbildung 7 der Informationstafel?

4. (Optional) Mache ein Bild von dir und/oder Gps vor einem der Höhleneingänge und poste es im Log!

Although officially one of the caves is free to visit, I would ask you not to enter them because of the protection of bats. To release the cache, it is not necessaryto enter the caves. If you want to explore the cave please come back from 1 April.

The mineral springs are not the only evidence of volcanic activity in the area.The volcanic activity has formed the landscape around Birresborn.
About 1 Million Years ago the earth opend his lithosphere.The most powerful streams of basalt lava that ever exhausted here in the Eifel came out.Even the volcano Kalem situated northern of Birresborn left about 40 meters hight basalt depositions.
The volcano of Fischbach belongs to the volcanogroup of Birresborn.From this volcano streams of lava regored but even volcanic embers and welding cinder were emitted which form the prominent rock formations where the Ice Caves are situated.
Between the rocks you can find the five entries of the Ice Caves.But not each cave become an ice cave.The Caves in the Fischbachtal fullfil all conditions.The porous volcanic rock is of higher moisture,so the genesis of the ice by evaporing cooling is the result.
The entrances to the caves are relatively high,while the passages lead down.Therefore the cold air can not deduct.In earlier times there was icebuilding in the cave in the summer month,but in the past years that doesn`t happened.
To log this cache please answere these questions and perform these conditions.
Go to the infopanel and study the board.
1. What process is responsible for the building of the caves?
2. What rock type is associated with the "Dachsberg"?
3. What shows Pict. 7 (Abb.7) of the Infopanel?
4. (Optional) Take a picture of you and/or yor GPS in front of one of the entrances of the caves and post it in your Log!
