Colonel Thomas Doane was born in 1821 in Orleans, (Cape Cod) Massachusetts. He was educated as a civil engineer and in 1869 moved to Nebraska and built the portion of the Burlington/Missouri Railroad and telegraph line from Plattsmouth to Kearney.
In 1871 he made Crete his home and continued laying track westward. The steam engines needed water every few miles so Doane built watering stations at 9 mile intervals. Towns sprang up near the stations along route. Col. Doane named the stations alphabetically beginning with Berk, just east of Crete, and westward from Crete: Dorchester, Exeter, Fairmont, Grafton etc.
Through Col. Doane’s efforts, the railroad donated 600 acres for the establishment of a college campus in conjunction with the Congregational Church.
Col. Doane became an administrator of the college and classes began in 1872, making Doane College the oldest church based college in Nebraska. Doane returned to Crete for 6 months a year until his retirement in 1912.
The current Crete campus is 350 acres in a beautiful park like- setting. Over 2,000 students attend the Crete and Lincoln campus and master’s degree programs. For more information about Doane College go to www.doane.edu
