Geocache Description:

Ancient Sanctuary of Apollos Korythos

Near Longa is the village of Agios Andreas. It was the ancient port of Longa with a shrine of Apollos Korythos. From the Geometric period on the shrine was destroyed and rebuild four times. In the Christian era the shrine was replaced by the nearby basilica and later replaced by the current church of Agios Andreas. Apollo Korythos means "Apollo head of the crest". When the site was discovered several dedications where found including one arachic miniature statue "dedicated from the messinians to athene for the spoils". It is now show in the National Museum in athens.

Nowadays only the ground walls remains of this shrine. It is hidden within the olive plantage of a local farmer who must gain access to the site according to greek regulations. Only one sign on the road to longa shows the site.
