Sheriff Richard Henry Hamilton 1869 – 1871 Uinta County Wyoming
Sheriff Richard Henry Hamilton was the first appointed sheriff of Uinta County, Wyoming Territory. He was appointed by The Territorial Governor .
This first Sheriff of Uinta County wore his star when times in the territory were desperate. Rules and regulations were made as crime and time dictated; law and order were foreign words to the few residents of the fledgling county.
It was a time without guidelines or jails. Even vigilantes did not seem interested in enforcement laws. This new county had been Dakota’s “ Outback “ and was seldom bothered by lawmen. When Wyoming became a territory and Uinta County was created, Sheriff Hamilton swore the oath of office, pinned on a badge and tried to maintain law and order without much support from state officials or county residents.
At the time of his appointment to office the new county seat was in Merrill which is located about two miles East of the present town of Fort Bridger.
In September of 1870 a general election was held and the county seat was changed to present day Evanston Wyoming. The election was close. But Evanston won by “ One “ Vote.
Sheriff Richard Hamilton was reelected to office at this general election.
This new ( Uinta ) county was created out of parts of Utah Territory, Idaho, and the North West part of Carter County Wyoming Territory.
Richard Henry Hamilton died of pneumonia on November 28 1888 at the age of 60. He is buried at the Fort Bridger Wyoming historical site.
In xxx his son Rob Roy Hamilton was elected to the post of Sheriff continuing on the family tradition of providing both public service and law enforcement.
