Stierstadter Heide

Abtragen

Bei der Stierstadter Heide handelt es sich um den Rest einer früher weit verbreiteten Kulturlandschaft, die im ausgehenden Mittelalter großflächig entstanden ist. Durch Abholzung und Beweidung wurde ein Aufwuchs von Sträuchern und Bäumen verhindert. Durch regelmäßiges Abtragen der oberflächlichen Humusschicht entstanden extrem nährstoffarme und durchlässige Böden, auf denen nur wenige Pflanzenarten ausreichende Lebensbedingungen fanden, z.B. Heidekrautgewächse, Wacholder und Kiefer. Diese Pflanzengruppe begünstigte die Haltung von Schafen, die diese harten Pflanzenteile besser als Rinder oder Pferde abweiden konnten.

Geologie des Heidebodens


Die Besonderheit des Heideboden besteht aus den zugrundeliegenden Erdschichten:
  • Rohhumusschicht
  • Humushaltiger Sandboden
  • Humusarme Bleichzone
  • Humusortstein (sehr fest)
  • ? (sehr fest)
  • Sand

Der Ortstein ist fast wasserundurchlässig und für Pflanzen undurchdringlich, so dass nur wenige Pflanzenarten gedeihen können.
Bodenschichten

Heute dient die Stierstadter Heide auch als Naherholungsgebiet, die unter anderem ein Fußballfeld, einen Abenteuerspielplatz samt Grillstelle in der Nähe bietet.

Folgende Fragen gilt es nun zu beantworten:
1) Wie nennt man das Abtragen des Oberbodens?
2) Wie heißt die sehr feste Bodenschicht über der Sandschicht?
3) Wann ist das Bild "Schafherde bei Oberursel" datiert?

The "Stierstadter Heide" is the remainder of a cultivated landscape that was popular during the late medieval times. Deforesting and grazing prevented the growth of bushes and trees. Continuous removal of the surface humus created soil that was extremely nutrient-poor and permeable, which provided living conditions only for few plant species, e.g. heath (erica), juniper and pine. These plants had an advantage for keeping sheep, as they were able to graze the hard plant parts much better than cattle or horses.

Geology of the heathland soil


The specific characteristics of the heathland soil are the underlying layers of earth:
  • duff layer
  • humus containing sandy soil
  • humus-poor bleachzone
  • humus podsol (very compact)
  • ? (very compact)
  • sand

The podsol layer is almost impermeable to water and plants, therefore only few plant species can grow here.

Today the "Stierstadter Heide" also serves as a recreational area sporting a soccer field, an adventure playground and a barbecue place close by.

The following questions are to be answered:
1) What was the removal of the top soil called?
2) What is the name of the very hard layer above the sand layer?
3) Which year dates the picture "Flock of sheep at Oberursel"?
