Geocache Description:

This is a tour of the historic Forest Hills Gardens - the community created to resemble an old English Village. For me the winding streets and the picturesque houses invoke images of Grimm brothers' fairy tales where mystical creatures hide behind every wrought iron gate. The cache will take 1-2 hours to complete and I highly recommend you explore the neighborhood.

Please download the cartridge from the Wherigo site. The current version is 1.5. Click here for the Cartridge.

In 1906, the Cord Meyer Development Company bought six farms covering 600 acres in the Hopedale area of Whitepot (so called because of the 17th-century English settlers who bought the land from Indians for three white clay pots). During the same year, financier Russell Sage died at the age of 89, leaving $90 million fortune to his wife, Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage. Mrs. Sage founded the Russell Sage Foundation, which in 1909 bought the land from Cord Meyer and planned on building Forest Hills Gardens for the people of moderate wealth and according to the Garden Cities principles.

The Russell foundation hired Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. (son of the famous architect of Central Park) and Grosvenor Atterbury (designer of the American wing of the Met) to head the project. The street layout was designed to discourage through traffic and allow for a park-like setting. The community consists of about 800 homes and includes both townhouses and apartment buildings.

There is absolutely NO PARKING within the Gardens. Your best bet is to take public transportation to the 71 St/Continental subway stop or LIRR to the Forest Hills stop. If you insist on driving in, look for a spot around Yellowstone Blvd, on the north side of Queens Blvd or on the meters near the Austin Street shopping area.
