Geocache Description:

A small cache at a rocky beach. No bushwacking required.

A short walk down a public trail which goes around Old Fort Henry. 200 years ago, when most travel was by water, this was a strategic location of great importance. Good access to the cache if approaching by water (kayak/canoe).

There is no fee to access the cache...there is pay parking during certain times.

PARKING INFO: When the fort is OPEN (summer months, and Oct/Nov evenings) there is a $5 parking fee. The fee ONLY applies when the fort is open, which is (summer) 9:30am-4:30pm daily, plus event evenings (usually sat and wed). To avoid the parking fee, simply visit outside of those hours. During Oct/Nov this fee is easily avoided by visiting during the day (before 6pm) or after 10pm. Free parking all winter. There is free parking at the bottom of Fort Henry Hill near the tourist information center, but it is a very long uphill walk. You may find street parking near the trailhead and alternate trailhead, but check carefully for signage to avoid a costly ticket.

The best way to visit this cache is by bike! No fees anytime! Bikes should follow the road behind the fort to the alternate trailhead for an easy and enjoyable ride to GZ.

Caution!!! There are moats here! Keep dogs and kids on a short leash until well away from the Fort. The signs which say "no access" mean that there is no entry to the fort from the trail. You are allowed down this public path, just be careful of the moats. The trail to GZ is bike friendly. By bike you can start at the trailhead, then continue all the way around the fort to exit at the alternate trailhead. This is a great cache for kids and dogs, with the exception of the danger due to moats.

From the trailhead, go around the low chain and continue down the grassy path being careful of the moat to your left. Follow this path until you can turn down the groomed grass hill toward GZ without bushwhacking.

When the fort is open, it is best to use the alternate trailhead.

When the Fort is "closed", the interior grounds are usually still open to the public. If the doors near the trailhead are open, feel free to wander in and explore inside the Fort on your own.

NOTE: A sign which says "NO ENTRY" means there is no access to the inside of the fort past that point...meant to lead tourists to the fort entrance. However, the path is a public walkway. I was given this info by the security staff. It is a popular walking/running/marching path.

WINTER: The area is not plowed in winter, and there are usually no marked winter trails...you are on your own. Although available, and easy to find in snow, this cache is best enjoyed in fair weather, with no snow or ice on the ground.
