L'aeroporto di Roma-Fiumicino "Leonardo da Vinci" è il maggiore scalo aereo italiano e hub di Alitalia.
Il traffico di oltre 33 milioni di passeggeri nell'anno 2009 ne fa il primo scalo nazionale e il sesto aeroporto d'Europa per passeggeri complessivi dopo quelli di Londra-Heathrow, Parigi-Roissy, Francoforte, Madrid e Amsterdam. Insieme all'aeroporto di Ciampino forma il sistema aeroportuale di Roma, con quasi 40 milioni di passeggeri annui (2009). Entrambi gli scali sono gestiti dalla Società Aeroporti di Roma (ADR).
Il Leonardo da Vinci dispone attualmente di quattro Terminal (T1, T2, T3 e T5) riservati ai voli nazionali, internazionali ed intercontinentali e di quattro piste: la 16L/34R e la 16R/34L (separate l'una dall'altra di 4.000 m), la 16C/34C prossima alla 16L/34R è utilizzata come pista di rullaggio o come backup della 16L/34R e la 07/25 utilizzata unicamente in direzione ovest a causa dei venti dominanti.
L'aeroporto opera dal 2005 con piste per atterraggi strumentali di precisione di categoria III B (sistema ILS).
Nel febbraio 2007 sono iniziati i lavori per un ulteriore adeguamento del sistema visivo luminoso a terra. In tal caso si passerà, in caso di fittissima nebbia, dai 10 movimenti per ora attuali ai 30 futuri.

The airport has been in activity since 2005 with special runways dedicated to precisional instrumental landings, Category III B (ILS).
On February 2007 ADR began to work for a new improvement of the visual lightsystem on ground. So movements will increase from 10 to 30 per hour, in case of thick fog.
