Geocache Description:

The war for a emergency services radio mast on the beautiful Snake Pass has raged for many years - today we have one of the smallest masked masts in the country.

The original request was for a six and a half metre mast, brand new lay-by and highly visible metal cabins to house equipment that would prominantly spoilt the countryside of this SSSI region. Subsequently, the Peak District National Park turned down five requests from Derbyshire Constabulary until the present plan was finally given the green light. A re-designed road sign was the answer, you might just spot a mast coming out of the top - but most people don't. The generator is buried on the opposite side largely out of view.

The area at the mast is a protected SSSI and for this reason there is no physical element at the initial location. Car parking spaces are available opposite the mast, but in fact there is no need to leave your vehicle. Simply identify the road sign and you can construct the final co-ordinates from the list of options below - it couldn't be easier. The final location is a few minutes drive down the road in the Ladyclough region, and a short walk on uneven ground at GZ will be required.

Road Sign Identification at Stage 1 co-ordinates:

For ABC, is the road sign:
SQUARE: 307
CIRCULAR: 109
TRIANGULAR: 130
RECTANGULAR: 962
TRIANGULAR WITH RECTANGULAR SIGN BELOW: 171

For DEF, does the sign warn of:
SHEEP: 304
ICE: 344
CORNER: 321
ROAD NARROWS: 969
NO OVERTAKING: 326

Final Co-ordinates - 53 25.ABC 001 50.DEF

Please note, the sign you should be concerned with is the permanent metal road sign, as supplied by the highways agency. Any other signs that may be attached to the post such as biker awareness etc that have been added by the police or county council are not relevant. Also note that ABCDEF all refer to the same sign, which should help.

The Masked Mast series was brought about to drawn attention to hidden masts across the country. Please feel free to continue the series!

Well done to m_dm for taking the FTF honours.
