This cache is part of the Nipigon River Trail Series of caches. The
Nipigon River Trail is part of the Voyageur Trail System, which,
when completed, will run from Sault Ste Marie to Thunder Bay. The
Nipigon River Trail runs from Nipigon to Red Rock. This series will
take you on the Nipigon portion of the trail. The series should
take no more than 2 hours to complete. The trail is a linear trail,
so you will have to backtrack to get back to your vehicle. If you
wish, you can carry on to Red Rock and pick up the other caches
along the trail, but you will need to figure out how to get back to
your car from there.
If you look really carefully in this area, you will see the
remains of an early sawmill. The forest industry has been an
important part of the Nipigon area for a long time. Through the
years, there have been at least 3 sawmills, a pulp mill and a
plywood mill in Nipigon, as well as the now idled pulp mill in Red
Rock. The local plywood mill, which had been recently purchased by
a group of local managers and employees, burned down in February
2007 putting 200 people out of work. Although there are plans to
restart the Plywood operation in the also idled Red Rock Mill, as
of the placement of this cache, it has not happened yet. It's
amazing how Mother Nature can take a site like this and slowly
reclaim it.
Cache is a partially camouflaged plastic jar full of trading
items, a log and a pencil. Trade for items of equal value and have
fun!
Note: B.A.S.K.’s Sawmill Point geocache is a short 5
minute walk from here, if you want it too.
