Chasing the Sun Traditional Cache

I thought I would have plenty of time this evening to take a fun hike up to the top of South Mountain Summit (I think that is what they call it). I had received information off the web about the best way to arrive at the top...and was stupid enough to follow it. I'll tell you this much...if you want this to turn into a rugged hike with a 5 for difficulty and terrain rating, start down by the Herriman reservoir. Go for it! That's what my dog and I did. We started at 7:15 pm and arrived at the top at 9:15 pm. Yes, I said 9:15 pm. The sun had set at least 15 minutes earlier. I will say the hike back was a thrill a minute...in the dark. Anyway, from up top I realized that the easiest way to access this peak (and cache) is to head over near the Cove area in Herriman and head to the Grayskys and Foreign Exchange caches (and pick them up if you don't already have them). Then walk (or jeep) up the switchback road to Caver Spencer's GR84X4 cache. Then find a nearby trail that heads farther up the mountain and you should arrive at this cache within 30 minutes. Warning...it IS still a hike since it is located at the highest point on this mountain, but the ascent is much more gradual with less scrub oak to mess with. You can see that I ran into a radio tower and knocked it over in the dark while trying to find my way home. Oops...that'll leave a mark. I especially placed this cache here for those of you geocaching geeks like me out there who enjoy a good hike with a cache and beautiful views at the end as your rewards. P.S.- Bring a flashlight just in case!
Congrats to Chasing Blue Sky for being the FTF! It must have been up for at least three weeks before anyone dared to take the hike!
