Geocache Description:

This area is an abandoned rest area along highway US-83 at approximately mile marker 122, it was closed around the time the new rest area (Lewis & Clark Interpretative Center) was built on the north edge of Washburn.

If you travel on the highway very much with kids you have definitely heard this caches name said before: "I Gotta Go Pee!"... well, this is NOT the place to do that, at least not anymore.

Years ago, before the new rest area was built on the north edge of Washburn, this was a busy and frequent stop for many travelers along US-83 for many, many years. I remember stopping here many times as a kid and into my early adulthood for a little relief from the road. Now there is nothing left but a short strip of asphalt, some concrete pads where buildings and picnic shelters used to be, lots of old memories, and ghosts of yesteryear.

At one time small rest areas like this were spread all over the state (and country) on almost every highway. All but a handful are now gone, but can still be seen in various states of decay and overgrowth all over the state if you look hard enough.

US Route 83 is one of the longest North-South US highways in the country, spanning from the Canadian to the Mexican border, with only 4 other North-South US highways being longer. Despite its length it has comparatively few concurrencies with any Interstate Highways, and those segments are short. Unlike most of the other longer US routes, in no place has it been decommissioned as a route.

Please do NOT park on the shoulder of the highway, for your own and others safety, you can easily park in the old entry and exit driveways well off the highway.

If you try this in the winter months, the difficulty and terrain could be 1-2 points higher depending on snow cover as this area is not maintained anymore.

Cache is a small peanut butter jar covered in camo tape and is fairly well hidden. Original contents include a FTF dollar in cold hard cache, log, stash sheet, and some micro-sized squirt guns.

BYOP... I forgot to put a pen or pencil in the cache, if someone could leave one I would appreciate it!

Congratulations to Tick_Magnet on getting First To Find!!!

7/24/2011 - Moved due to NDDOT bulldozing original location. Also, if you use a Google Maps based geocaching app, make sure and use Terrain or Road as the view, the Satellite View in this area is off quite a bit.
