On the north edge of Pioneer Park in Underwood, ND.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first cache in Underwood, ND, and at the time of this posting is the only one within about a 10 mile radius of town.

Sadly, this park is getting pretty run down and is in desperate need of renovation, but when you pull up to it try to think of it in it's prime 40 to 50 years ago...

Kids would meet and play here, being only a half a block off of "Old" US Route 83, traveling families would stop here to rest, use the bathroom, and let the kids get out and play after being stuck in the car and I am sure many a Fourth of July and other summer celebrations were held here as well in times when the park has seen better days.

Now, with the "New" US-83 four lane highway just east of town, kids vegging out in front of the TV, computers, and other video games, and just the general state of society, this park is now rarely used. The slide is gone, and if you follow the tree row from the parking are to north end of the park you will find the remains of it (not a bad way to go to start heading for the cache), the paint is peeling off much of the equipment, and the picnic shelter and tables are definitely showing their age as well.

But all is not bad with this park, it is "classic" and will bring back memories of a better time. It even has a rarely seen anymore Merry-Go-Round that has been well used as is evident by the well worn path around it, and still works great today (at least my 12 year old thought so!). Like I said, just try to image in it as it once was...

This cache is along an old portion of US Route 83, in fact the road you will likely take to get to the park is called "Old US Highway 83".

US Route 83 is one of the longest North-South US highways in the country, spanning from the Canadian to the Mexican border, with only 4 other North-South US highways being longer. Despite its length it has comparatively few concurrencies with any Interstate Highways, and those segments are short. Unlike most of the other longer US routes, in no place has it been decommissioned as a route.

Cache is a powdered drink mix container covered in camo tape and is very well hidden. Original contents include a FTF dollar in cold hard cache, log, stash sheet, and some glow stick toys for kids.

BYOP... I forgot to put a pen or pencil in the cache, if someone could leave one I would appreciate it!

I am hoping this will become part of a series of caches I will place along US Route 83 in North Dakota.

Congratulations to Tick_Magnet on his FTF on July 17, 2010!!!
