The cache is near The Monument, a tribute to the many U.S. soldiers who died in sea disasters during WWI.
Christine, a resident of Islay, [aka "The Lady of the Isles" -- she was my guide while I was there] was introduced to geocaching at Caol Ila and was enthralled with it. She thought there should be more caches on the island, and she recommended that we put this one together to place near The Monument. Judging from the logs, it was a brilliant idea.
Christine is diligent about maintaining the cache, since I have not been back to Islay since we placed it. She deserves a big vote of gratitude.
The cache is a clip-lock plastic container. When initially placed, it had some souvenirs from Canada, British Columbia, Ottawa, and some of the local distilleries.
The site itself is spectacularly open and wind-swept. Parking is quite some distance away, but the walk up to the monument is well-marked and fairly easy.
Note: The cache had been moved by someone at one point, but Christine has replaced the cracked container and placed it in the original spot.
Update (2016): Christine write, "I checked up on the little box but moved it along a bit. I don't know whether it is erosion or not but some of the big heavy stones have moved and finding a place is more challenging. Alls' good and the box is still in good shape." And so if you have a chance when you visit the cache, could you please post the revised co-ordinates, and possibly suggest revisions for the hint, if necessary? Thanks.
