One of my favorite bands of all time is The Eagles. It seems that most people either love their music, or hate it. When my daughter was first dating the young man who is now my son-in-law, we were all in the car together when an Eagles song came on the radio. I started going on about how much I like their music, what a great song this is, blah, blah, blah. I didn’t hear much response from the back seat. Later when we were alone, my daughter told me, “Dad, Pat REALLY HATES the Eagles!” Despite that rough start, I get along with him great now, though I DON’T try to make him listen to the Eagles!

But… I AM going to make YOU listen, and learn more about the band than you probably ever wanted to know. So I hope you’re not in the “hate em” category; and if so maybe doing this puzzle will bring you over from the dark side. All of the information you need can be found from our old friend Wikipedia, and from finding some of the songs to listen to. A site called Grooveshark works well, or there are plenty of clips on YouTube. To listen to the audio clips of guitar leads mentioned, just click on the picture above.

The Eagles had 10 singles in the 70s and early 80s that made the Top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. You need to find those songs, match them up with the clues provided, and find a number to map to each letter to fill out the coords below.

N 38 AB.CDE, W 121 VW.XYZ

A - This song was also recorded by another artist, and that version hit #6 on the Country chart. One of the co-writers of the song (not an Eagle) had his only #1 hit with a song from the movie “Beverly Hills Cop II”. How many letters in his first name?

B - The first guitar lead on the attached audio clip is from this song. What is the highest position the song reached on the singles chart?

C - The third guitar lead on the attached audio clip is from this song. Based on a call to the captain, what is the last digit of the last year that wine was available?

D - The Eagle who sang lead on this song was also the star of a TV series… which lasted for all of one episode! The bass player plays an instrument on this song that is unusual for a rock band. How many strings does it have?

E - This song contains the optimistic lyric, “But every mornin’ I wake up and worry, what’s gonna happen today?”. You are looking for a number from the song on the “B” side of the single.

V - The bass player who sang lead on this song grew up in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Nothing to do with the puzzle… but my wife Holly went to high school with him. In his high school band, he used to sing “Gloria” to her, changing the words to “H-O-L-L-Y, Holly”. According to the lyric at the end of the chorus, how many more times should the advice from the title be observed?

W - The bass player who sang lead on this song grew up in Sacramento. Nothing to do with the puzzle… but my daughter’s father-in-law Al went to high school with him. As far as I know, he never sang any songs to Al. Find the last digit of the year an “electrofunk” (whatever that is!) version of the song was released.

X - The second guitar lead on the attached audio clip is from this song. Using the standard method, convert the first letter of the last name of the lead singer of the “B” side of the single to a number.

Y - Elton John kept this song from reaching #1 on the U.S. Billboard chart. The Eagle who played lead guitar on the song was previously a member of a band named after a type of Mexican food. What is the last digit of the year that band released their first album?

Z - The Eagle who sang lead on this song was born in the same town as another singer who had a big hit over 20 years earlier with “Chances Are”. Using the standard method, convert the first letter of the name of the city mentioned in the song (the Eagles song) to a number.

PRIZE FOR FTF: Four eagles; one for each current member of the band.

Congrats to turuthok for another FTF. (Watch out, LC!) He certainly wasn't "the sleeper" this morning!
