Another in georgia2maine's downtown 'treasures' cache chest. When found, you are staring at the AT&T Communications Building. Built in 1929, it was the location of the Charlotte Operator Switchboard. More recently, it housed the central switch for the 704 area code and the AT&T Long Lines facility.
Upon the seperation of the Bell System in the mid-80s, the building had to be split between BellSouth and AT&T, as much of the equipment could not be seperated.
Undergoing many additions and renovations, the most recent was in 1978, when most of the backside of the building facing Davidson Street was constructed.
Enjoy this area, in a few years, it won't be the same as hotels, condos and other commercial and residential development takes place. Use your stealth, stand around, make a phone call, but don't get muggled. Happy searching, is that a dial tone I hear?
