Geocache Description:

This is #1 of a series of 7 caches each containing a clue to the coordinates of a bonus cache. Each cache is named after a species of wildlife that may be found on the RSPB Aylesbeare Nature Reserve. The long description below is only given for this cache; the others in the series are referred back to it.

Aylesbeare Common is one of the few remaining lowland heathlands in the UK and is managed by the RSPB as a nature reserve. The RSPB has kindly consented to the placement of this series of geocaches. For more information on the Common and the species of wildlife that may be encountered please go to the RSPB website @ (visit link)
The Reserve is open at all times and admission is free. Parking is available at Johnny’s Cross off the A3052 at N50 41.965 W003 20.209. Take care crossing the main road on to the Reserve which you enter down a tarmac farm drive. About 50 metres on your left is the RSPB notice board with a map of the Common; information about the habitat, flora and fauna and trail guides.
Only this cache is accessible for wheelchairs & strollers. Whilst the others are all adjacent to the trails and public footpaths, these in places are uneven & at times muddy. There is a flight of steps on the path along the brook.
On the reserve:
- Dogs on leads are allowed.
- Please take care not to start fires.
- Ticks are common on heathland and you should check your clothing and skin after your visit as ticks can cause Lyme disease.
- Please do not wander off the trails (all the caches are close by) as this may disturb the wildlife. Also adders may be encountered especially during the summer months.
The route is approximately 3.5 miles and the site of cache #7 is a great spot to stop for some refreshments. If you can lay your hands on a pair of binoculars it should add to the enjoyment of your day. When you log your visit I should be interested to know the species you have come across.
Each of caches #1-7 contains a numerical clue to the bonus cache as follows:
N50 BF. (C-G) A (G-F) W003 FD. (E+F) C (A+B)
You are looking for a small plastic box in a camo bag.
After taking in the marvellous views of the Otter Valley, turn right and head east down the track for cache #2.
