The park specialist at MDJSP told us that the Haunted Hike will be back by popular demand so wear your best costume.
About the park:
History: Martin Dies, Jr. State Park, until 1965 known as the Dam B State Park, is a 705-acre recreational area in Jasper and Tyler Counties between Woodville and Jasper on B. A. Steinhagen Reservoir (15,000 acres). The land for the park was acquired under a 50-year lease from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1964 and was opened in 1965.
Activities: Visitors can enjoy camping, hiking, boating, canoeing, fishing, swimming, mountain biking and wildlife and bird watching. There are canoes, bicycles, volleyballs, and horseshoes for rent.
October 30 is the date for our Haunted Hike, & is also the date for Texas Outdoor Family... the haunted Hike starts at 6:00, with guides leading groups of people down the haunted trail... there will also be hotdogs & marshmallows to roast ($1.00 donation) with a soda included, and games & prizes... kids like to wear their Halloween costumes...
Campsites & Other Facilities: The park has 2 Limited Use Cabins (also known as mini-cabins), one in the "Hen House Ridge" shelter area and one in the “Walnut Ridge” shelter area. The cabins have heat, air conditioning, bunk beds (bring your own linen) and a screened porch. The outside has water, a fire-ring with a grill, a BBQ pit, and a picnic table. 4 Screen shelters have been remodeled to include heat and air conditioning. These Shelters with Amenities are located in the “Hen House” and “Walnut Ridge” shelter areas.
Other facilities include screened shelters; campsites with water; campsites with water and electricity; a group dining/meeting hall; restrooms with hot showers; trailer dump stations; playgrounds; lighted fishing piers; fish-cleaning facilities; boat ramps; 4 miles of multi-use trails for hiking and mountain biking; 2 miles of nature/interpretive trail; a Texas State Park Store located at the Headquarters and a Nature Center located in the Walnut Ridge unit.
Cache Container Contest We want to thank everyone who helped make our last Cache Container Contest such a success. The contest has proved to be great geo-fun! It was so much fun; we decided to do it again.
So, gather your caching contraband and start thinking like a geocacher to create that killer cache container for the Octoberfest 2010 Cache Container Contest.
Two Divisions in the Contest: Small & Below: From nanos to sandwich-sized Tupperware-style containers or similar, less than approximately 1 quart
Regular & Above: From larger Tupperware-style containers to ammo cans or larger
Two Categories in each Division: Most Creative: Imaginative, interesting, cute -- overall creative in design and execution.
Most Challenging: Evil, difficult, well-camoed -- overall challenging in design and execution
Awards and prizes will be presented to all winners. Of course, there is also that intangible reward: peer recognition!
Guidelines: All entries must be received by 12 p.m. Saturday, October 30th. No late entries will be accepted. There is no need to pre-enter and there is no limit on the number of entries. All entries must be new, not previously hidden caches. Cache containers must be ready to hide, including a weather-proof log book or log sheet able to stand up to the elements without leaking or breaking. Name your cache but do NOT put your name on your cache. All cache containers entered into this Contest become property of the Contest. The winning containers will be auctioned and any remaining entries will be awarded as door prizes at the Event.
Contest entrants are eligible to win in more than one division and/or category. Contest entrants are eligible to bid on the winning containers. Contest entrants are eligible to win containers as door prizes. Containers will be on display in the Event Pavilion as entries are received until the prize drawings begins. Winners will be announced during the doorprize / auction ceremony after lunch on Saturday. You need not be present to win, but it is preferred.
The Aftermath: "What happens to my creation after Octoberfest 2010?" The recipients and successful bidders of the Cache Container Contest containers may do what they like with their acquisitions. The only thing we ask is that they acknowledge the creator on the cache page if and when they deploy the container. ProMed Rick will create and maintain a bookmark list for these caches. Details will be given to each container door prize winner. Contact: ProMed Rick at (visit link) or through private message on setxgang.com. We are also looking for volunteers to judge the contest.
