Geocache Description:

Inning #5 is just one in a series of caches to be released this summer each Saturday along the highway 78 corridor. As with other caches in the series the FTF is awarded a home run (4 bases), the 2nd to find a triple (3 bases), the 3rd to find a double (2 bases) and the 4th to find a single (1 base). Bases will accumulate over the summer and whoever has the most will be crowned the World Series Champion of 2010. What do they win? My admiration.

Logs should be clear as to who is first, second, third, and fourth to find otherwise the Commissioner will have to simply award bases on his best judgment.

Heading to the fifth the current score is:

Celestinau....................................................9 bases

7Riddles.......................................................7 bases

Mcgarveyma..................................................6 bases

Calipers, fsafranek, Condor Man & Tim 10966...4 bases

Rockhoundbmw.............................................2 bases

Inning #5 is in honor of the New York/San Francisco Giants

Some quick facts about the Giants:

Under legendary manager John McGraw the Giants refused to play in the 1904 World Series with the defending world champion Boston Americans (later renamed the "Red Sox") because McGraw considered the new American League to be inferior to the senior National League.

During the second half of the 1951 season the Giants overcame a 13½-game lead held by the cross town rival Dodgers. The two teams ended the season with identical records and settled the pennant with a three game playoff. The third and deciding game was won for the Giants by Bobby Thompson’s “Shot Heard Round the World”. Years later it was revealed that during this incredible winning streak the Giants had actually positioned a coach in the center field seats with a telescope during home games to steal the signals of opposing catchers. Thus the Giant batters always knew what pitch was coming.

In 1999 Giant legend Willie Mays placed second on The Sporting News list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players, making him the highest-ranking living player. Later that year, he was also elected to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. Mays is one of five NL players to have eight consecutive 100-RBI seasons, along with Mel Ott, Sammy Sosa, Chipper Jones and Albert Pujols. Mays won two MVP awards and tied a record with 24 appearances in the All-Star Game. He ended his career with 660 home runs, currently fourth all-time behind his godson and fellow San Francisco Giant Barry Bonds.

After a twenty seven year absence from the World Series the San Francisco Giants retuned in 1989 only to be swept in four games by the powerful Oakland A’s. The series is most notably remembered for game 3 being delayed for over a week after pre game ceremonies were interrupted by the Loma Prieta earthquake. The series was continued ten days later after Candlestick Park was deemed safe to host the games.

One of the most controversial players to wear a Giant uniform was all time home run leader Barry Bonds whose career was overshadowed by the baseball steroids scandal of the early 21st century. In 2007 he was indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice concerning his testimony on steroid use.
