Geocache Description:

Magnetic Nano

An iconic sculpture standing 36 feet high of a heroic miner, unveiled on the new bypass roundabout at Pegswood on Thursday 10 September at 6pm

The sculpture named ‘fire’ has been commissioned by The Welbeck Estates Company Limited to reflect the area’s mining heritage of the past, present and future. It was unveiled in a short ceremony by William Parente, Chairman of Welbeck Estates Company Limited.

The sculpture, the work of local artist Tom Maley, whose work includes Jackie Milburn, bronze statue at Newcastle United FC and the unknown bronze soldier at the war memorial in Ashington. The sculpture, affectionately dubbed ‘Robin of Pegswood’ consists of a miner cast in bronze, fixed to a stainless steel girder and emerging from an 18 inch high coal seam.

The miner symbolically firing his shovel against an imaginary coalface will act as a permanent reminder of the strength and determination of the men who worked in some of the most challenging conditions in coal seams as low as 18 inches.

The title Robin was given as he links two of the estates owned by Welbeck Estates Company Limited, Bothal in Northumberland and Welbeck in Nottinghamshire. Welbeck Estates are owned by the Dukes of Portland who have owned land in Nottinghamshire and Northumberland for hundreds of years. Some of this land encompasses parts of Sherwood Forest.

Positioned on the on the A197/C395) intersection of the recently opened Pegswood bypass, the sculpture will be visible from all approaches and will add to South East Northumberland’s growing reputation for significant public art.

The sculpture will be lit by up-lighters at night providing 24 hours viewing

Contributors to this project are: The Welbeck Estates Company Limited, Northumberland County Council, former Wansbeck District Council, Pegswood Parish Council, Northern Coalfields Property Company Limited, Sanders Plant and Waste Management Limited, Cookswell Garage Limited, Keith Pugh.
