CATALINA!! Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

HDSpringer: This cache has been a lot of fun for me and many others. It is in a lovely spot.

Unfortunately finders let the placement drift, and then it gets reported missing when it has just drifted.

Sadly I am unable to maintain this cache now.

Thanks

Geocache Description:

This is an easy cache designed to bring cachers to the beautifully redeveloped Bowen Strand. It is a beautiful place but don't forget to check out all the other magnificent sights in this small town.

Bowen is Queensland's oldest town. It was founded before Townsville, Mackay or Charters Towers and has a colourful past. The first white man to live in the region was James Morrill who was shipwrecked just north of what was to become the town site. Morrill made his home in Bowen and is buried in the Bowen Cemetery.

A monument stands on Bowen's foreshore marking the site of the wartime Catalina base, and and a museum was built at the Aerodrome during the Coral Sea celebrations and commemorates the involvement Bowen had as a base for Catalina flying boats during World War II. The museum contains five dioramas all built on 1/72 scale. These include the USS Lexington, believed to be the largest model of a ship on display in Australia. She is complete with Douglas Dauntless, Douglas Devastator and Grumman F4F-4 Wildcats.

Now this beautiful Catalina Interpretive Centre has been built as part of the Strand Redevelopment and reminds us all of the part played by Bowen during the War. We hope you enjoy visiting this area and finding the cache!

PLEASE ENSURE THAT THE CACHE IS REPLACED IN THE EXACT SPOT WHERE YOU FOUND IT!!! WE HAVE BEEN DOWN ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS TO FIND IT IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PLACE TO WHERE IT SHOULD BE.
