With gold discovered in Yackandandah in 1852 the Cemetery was established in 1859 to cater for the population growth.
The cemetrery contains many notable local people including our first European settlers James Osborne and descendants of James Kinchington. A large Chinese community including 26 unknown grave sites. Only 3 of the remaining undated footstones are still legible.
The first burial was Ellen Anderson 14mths old 7.9.1859.
Looking at some of these sites is a great reminder that we are on this good earth for just a short while. Every person has on their gravestone or plaque stating the day they were born, a date they died. Contemplate about the space between the dates and what you would be remembered for.
You will see a Visitor’s Box where you can get a map of the cemetery and the locations of many historic grave sites.
Stealth is a must! This is a very popular area for visitors and locals to pay their respects.
There are tours conducted on request to show some of the grave sites and in particular noting the flora and fauna.
Cache is a regular size cache.
