Soapstone Mountain is appropriately named, all the visible rocks
are soapstone. Atop the mountain there are several piles of stones,
which look to be the right size for graves, but I can’t find
anybody that knows for sure what they are. It is sort of creepy at
dusk. Soapstone Mountain is located on Lake Russell State Wildlife
Management Area. There are several ways to get to the cache,
depending on which road you use and which gates the Forest Service
has open, what kind of vehicle you have, and how good you are with
it, you may only have to walk 1/3 of mile to get to the cache. To
place it we had to hike 2 miles from the east and the terrain
rating is based on that hike. Every time in the past when we had
been there, the way to the top of the mountain had a very faint
trail, like a game trail. But when we hid the cache there was a
very definite trail to the top. So to try and avoid the cache being
found by hunters and other mundanes , we hid it fairly well. But I
think an experienced geocacher can find it without help and I am
including a hint just in case. But I will tell you that it isn’t
hidden under stones so there is no need to bother the piles of
stones.
Note: this cache was placed with knowledge and approval of
USFS.
As I said the cache is located in a wildlife management area:
