Old St. Mary's Nano
St. Mary’s Episcopal Church was founded in 1702 and is considered to be the Mother Parish of New Jersey. The Old Church is on the corner of Broad and Wood Streets and was constructed in 1703. The building is used for events, concerts, meetings and services during the summer. The New Church, built between 1846-54, was designed by Gothic Revival architect Richard Upjohn. This church was built as the cathedral for the second Bishop of New Jersey, George Washington Doane. The interior of the New Church was destroyed by a disastrous fire in 1976 and was rebuilt using its original design.
Many notable persons are buried in St. Mary’s Churchyard including Bishop George Washington Doane, Col. Daniel Coxe (early Proprietor of NJ), Elias Boudinot (president of the Continental Congress), William Bradford (George Washington’s attorney general), and Franklin D’Olier (first commander of the American Legion).
St. Mary's was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985.
You are free to wander around the churchyard during daylight hours. The churches are open for services on Friday noon, 5:30 PM Saturday, and 7:30 and 9:00 AM on Sunday. There is a small “museum” in the Eyre Memorial Room of the Old Church.
Church information comes from St. Mary's website.
