Polaris just about marks the northern hemisphere's celestial pole. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the brightest star in the sky (that distinction goes to Sirius, the Dog Star). It is actually relatively dim, being the 48th brightest star. Because of the Earth's precession, its axis wobbles during a 26,000 year period. Polaris was not always the north star, and around the year 2105, will eventually begin to pull away. For now, it remains a great point of reference for navigation here in the northern hemisphere of Earth!
