Geocache Description:

"I'm going back again to Yarrawonga, In Yarrawonga I'll linger longer, I'm going back again to Yarrawonga, Where the skies are always blue..." The song was popular during WW1 and was later recorded by Slim Dusty. WELCOME TO YARRAWONGA/MULWALA

THE EARLY DAYS:

In the early days of the Yarrawonga settlement there were two recognized methods of crossing the Murray River – by boat, or via Wahgunyah. From 1855 to 1862, a Mulwala hotel owner named McRae, built a punt to cross the river at Yarrawonga but was not successful as the preferred crossing continued to be via Wahgunyah.

From 1874 to 1891 Robert Halburd built Yarrawonga’s best known and most successful punt. His punt crossed the Murray River very close to where the traffic bridge stands. He had no competition until 1879 when William Coghill provided a new operation just west of Halburd’s punt.

However, Coghill’s punt was mysteriously sunk the following day, and Halburd’s punt remained in operation until the opening of the first bridge in 1891 which then put him out of business.

LAKE MULWALA:

Lake Mulwala was created in 1939 by building a dam across the Murray River between Yarrawonga in Victoria and Mulwala in New South Wales to provide irrigation water for the surrounding district. The road bridge across the lake was built before the lake was filled.

THE TRAFFIC BRIDGE:

Construction of the first (wooden) traffic bridge began in 1889 and was completed in 1891. Three days of celebration followed – exciting times! This wooden bridge was located next to the current traffic bridge. By 1915, the wooden bridge had become unsafe – some of the wooden pylons are still visible when the lake is drained.

The new steel and concrete traffic bridge was started in 1917 and construction completed in 1924. The old wooden bridge was then demolished.

Because of poor co-ordination between the Victorian and NSW Governments of the time, construction began at both ends independently and at different levels. A re-design was necessary to get both ends of the bridge to meet. The result of the re-design was the infamous “dip and bend”.

Proposals are in place to have a new traffic bridge constructed to cater for the growing needs of the community however this is still in its fledgling stages.

TO THE CACHE:

This multi is designed so that you take in the sights of the Yarrawonga foreshore. If you decide to walk, please be extremely careful with local traffic particularly in the summer months.

The starting co-ordinates will bring you to a plaque, you will need to obtain the following information:

(1) How many times does the letter ‘I’ appear on the 4th line = A

(2) The number of ‘R’s in the first line multiplied by 2 = B

(3) The number of words in the 7th line = C

(4) The number of ‘O’s in the 8th line = D

(5) Number of times the word ‘THE’ appears on plaque = E

(6) Number of times the letter “C” appears on plaque = F

WP1 – S36 00.ABC E146 00.DEF

At WP1 you will need to obtain the following information by locating the numerical equivalent (region number) for the following:

(7) Sunraysia = G

(8) Western NSW / Darling River = H

(9) Upper Murray / Mid-Murray = I

(10) Mid Murray minus Upper Murray = J

(11) Non-Riparian / South Australia = K

(12) Riverland minus 5 = L

WP2 – S36 00.GHI E146 00.JKL

At WP2 you will need to obtain the following information to determine GZ:

(13) How many shillings would it cost for a Horse & Cart PLUS a dray or buggy? = M

(14) How many times does the word “HORSE” appear? = N

(15) The first punt was operated by James McRae from 1855 to 186P = P

(16) How many punts operated from the north end of Belmore Street minus 1? = Q

(17) How many shillings did it cost for a horse & cart multiplied by 4? = R

(18) How many cents did it cost for foot passengers plus 3? = S

GZ - S36 00.MNP E146 00.QRS

Cache is a micro only so please bring a pen - you may also need an extraction tool to obtain the log sheet. Please use ninja stealth at GZ which is a popular area particularly in the warmer months.

Happy caching!
