Razim - Sinoe - the lost lagoon
The most ambitious project of Nicolae Ceausescu related to the Danube Delta was the partial draining of the lakes Razim - Sinoe and transformation of large water areas into agriculture land. The lakes, forming at that moment the biggest lagoon complex in Europe, have been separated by land (virgin beaches today), which created a lot of ecological problems in the area. The most stupid decision of Ceausescu was to close the communication between tha Black Sea and the lagoon through several points from South of Portita, in order to reduce the area of the lakes Razim-Sinoe. Practically they wished to completely suppress any communication beetwen sea and the lagoon, in order to ease the construction of moles. Works were finished in 1974, however there are areas when the so called separation does not measure 10 m and does not exceed 30-40 cm in height, so any higher wave is flooding the area. Communists were following to transform Razim-Sinoe lakes through desalinisation in water sources for agricultural land in the neighborhood. But the ecological impact was disastrous: many species of birds, fishes and animals were affected and even disappeared. It worth to mention one important aspect: sturions population of the black sea was the biggest in the whole world. Every seasons, sturions were entering the lagoon through Portita, Periteasca and Periboina, important gates of communication between the lagoon and the sea. Tones of caviar were collected, the country being the biggest exporter of caviar.
You may find this cache coming by car on Grindul Chituc until Vadu and from there by bike/foot (as no car is allowed due to natural reserve status). 20 km later you will arrive to one of the fewest places where the lagoon still communicates with the sea. The place is called Edighiol. From this you can advance to Periboina (5 km, another gate of communication between lagoon and the sea) and Portita (15 km, walking on sand)
