Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden along the Miami and Erie Canal Towpath Hiking Trail (40 miles long from Fort Loramie to Delphos) which is part of the longer Buckeye Trail (1445 miles long circling Ohio). This section is also part of the even longer North Country Trail (4600 miles long spanning from North Dakota to New York).

40 Acre Pond is currently a large water reservoir along the canal that is usually filled with lilies and lots of wildlife. This is a very scenic section and used for short hikes by many people. When built with the canal it was used as a turnaround for canal boats and a stabilizer of the water level. If water level in the canal got too low or needed to be flushed out, they could release water from the pond to flow north and then that water would drain out at the 6 Mile Aqueduct.
