Geocache Description:

Located just off a short hiking trail loop within the Laurel Display viewing area near Clear Creek State Park. A new location for an old Jefferson Stamp #5 (check your passports!).

This cache is part of the ten-county Allegheny GeoTrail project. It contains a special stamp to be used in your GeoTrail passport, which you'll want to obtain before setting out to find the cache. Please do not remove the stamp! Get your passport stamped at 6 or more AGT caches within a county, and get a FREE geocoin representing that county. There are ten different coins to collect, plus a bonus 11th coin if you get all 10 counties. Click the logo for more information!

Start this cache off with a driving tour around the Laurel Viewing loop to see some great natural examples of Pennsylvania's state flower, the Mountain Laurel. Then park at the pavilion (restrooms of the portable type are available) and enjoy the secluded beauty of this area while hunting for the cache.

The cache is a .30 cal ammo can and is hidden just a few paces off of the Tolliston Loop trail. Please Tread Lightly!

Now for some history of this area: it was originally cleared for farming by the Tolliston Family in the 1800's (hence the trail's name). You can still see old stone foundations in the cache area. The land was too rocky and sandy, so farming did not pan out. The land was bought by National Fuel Gas, which, along with PA Forestry, set up the Laurel Viewing Area. This area was home to the PA Laurel Festival for a few years, then acquired by Matson Lumber, who today helps maintain the area in cooperation with PA DCNR Bureau of Forestry. Find out more at the information kiosk near the trail head.
