I wanted to get a picture of myself on this rock, but since I couldn’t get up on it without cheating, I did the next best thing, I hid a cache near it.
I recently spent a week at the adjacent campground with an ol’ shipmate of mine and we decided that Gilbert needed a cache. I live fulltime on the roadways of America however, my buddy lives nearby and agreed to be the caretaker for the cache.
The cache is located on public property near a city owned boat launch less than ¼ mile from the Mesabi Trail and is a great place to take a break and enjoy the wonderful view of Lake Ore-Be-Gone. It is easily accessible via paved walkways and roads. No need to bushwhack or cut through the campground. There is nearby parking with turn-around room for small to medium sized RVs. Not advisable for large rigs.
Be stealthy and watch out for muggles! At times the place can be crawling with muggles, but most of them are out on/under the water however, be especially aware of the sneaky ones peering down from the hillside just beyond the rock.
Lake Ore-be-gone is a man-made lake formed by the flooding of three open-pit iron ore mines within the city limits of Gilbert. Since the flooding of the mining pits, the area around the lake has been subject to land reclamation however, as of June 2007, the beaches have been closed due to low water. The waste ground from the pits now form in-part, the famed Iron Range ATV Park, Minnesota's 1st Off Highway Vehicle Recreation Area. The lake's name is a pun on the well-known fictional town of Lake Wobegon, purportedly located in Minnesota.
FTF prize is a pathtag commemorating the 1st geocaching rally held by my RV Club’s Geocaching BOF (Birds of a Feather) Group in Feb of 2010 in Quartzite, Arizona. A rare collector’s item, indeed……………….
