Geocache Description:

A reasonably long hike along this remote coast to a cache that forms part of the Shipwreck Series. For the series methodology and more info visit SS: Shipwreck Series via the related web page link.

The Royal Mail Steamer Kafir was a Union Company iron-steam coaster. She was built in 1873 and carried passengers and cargo between Zanzibar and Cape Town. She had a crew of 72 commanded by Captain Ward. She was also carrying 70 passengers, many bags of mail from East Africa, two thousand cases of Admiralty stores for two man-o'-wars at Zanzibar.

She struck Albatross Rock at 17h20 in fair weather and with water pouring in amidships the captain decided to make for shore. About 400 metres from the shore she grounded. It was strictly women and children first and some men were forcibly removed from the lifeboats. Two successful trips were made before darkness fell and it was considered too dangerous to continue.

During the night the ship split in two. 5 crew members jumped overboard in an attempt to make it to shore. One made it, but four drowned including Abdullah who was present at the famous Stanley / Dr Livingstone meeting.

At first light some fishermen arrived and a further four trips later, the rest of the men on board had made it safely to shore.

It was found during the inquiry that the ship's chart had not been updated to reflect Albatross Rock which had been discovered 15 years earlier.
